"A trash heap, and a token / Everything stays broken." For a performance billed as "part concert, part wake, part theatrical extravaganza," I designed a scenic environment focused on reuse: elements were sourced from and inspired by Lincoln Center Theater's own stock in storage. The decontextualized, decommissioned sets from past shows returned to this haunted stage to back up The Bengsons' songs of grief and hope amid personal loss and environmental disaster. As a creative team, we set out to dance in the ruins and celebrate ongoingness, drawing on popular forms like pageants and parades, Romantic genre paintings of shipwrecks, and Bob Fosse's inimitable film All That Jazz.
"Cate McCrea’s “Keep Going” set is constructed of what we’re told are elements recycled from productions in Lincoln Center Theater’s Broadway house. The thrust stage is flanked by bright green, globe-topped streetlights standing askew, as if Sesame Street had been thrown into chaos."
